How singing sessions cement strong bonds

Sing and Grow programme uses songs and games to encourage interaction between parents and children in adoptive families.

Project
Essex County Council Adoption Support Services

Purpose
To boost attachment in adoptive families

Funding
From the adoption support services' budget with each 10-week course costing £2,500

Background

Managers at Essex County Council's adoption support services were keen to test the Sing and Grow music therapy programme, which was developed in Australia and brought to the UK in 2010. "Our main aim was to improve attachment between adoptive parents and children," explains Marie Higgins, adoption support services manager. "But a by-product of any group work is adoptive parents get together and support each other. Some families can become very isolated."
