How personal budgets help families change their lives for the better

Vulnerable families make positive changes to their lives through personal budgets thanks to this project.

PROJECT
Improving Futures Worcestershire

FUNDING
£900,000 over three years from September 2012 from the Big Lottery Fund's Improving Futures programme plus £100,000 from Worcestershire County Council

BACKGROUND
Worcestershire Family Intervention Project, run by Vestia Community Trust, provided packages of support to families facing complex problems. However, managers were keen to give more control to families and in 2011 applied for lottery funding to trial personal budgets.

"We wanted to get alongside families and understand their goals and aspirations, doing it with them, not to them," says Mel Bailey, head of families at Vestia.

ACTION
The organisation formed a partnership with three charities to work with families in deprived neighbourhoods in three areas of Worcestershire - Onside Advocacy in Pershore, Epic social enterprise in Redditch, and Worcester Community Trust. These organisations provided eight key workers, each handling a caseload of between four and eight families.
