How course reduces risk of offending behaviour

Project improves outcomes for 14- to 25-year-olds with learning or communication difficulties involved in or at risk of offending.

Project: Raising Your Game

Funding: £5m over five years from the Big Lottery's Young People's Fund

Background: Between 20 and 30 per cent of prisoners have learning disabilities which mean they struggle to cope in the criminal justice system, increasing their risk of reoffending.

This was a key finding from the No One Knows investigation by the Prison Reform Trust into problems faced by offenders with learning disabilities. Its final report, published in 2008, highlighted the need for training for criminal justice staff and was a catalyst for learning disability charity Mencap to develop a programme for both young people and professionals.

Action: Mencap teamed up with children's communication charity I Can and crime reduction charity Nacro to deliver Raising Your Game, which started in November 2009 in six areas: Manchester, Leeds, West Midlands, Hertfordshire, East Kent, and Avon and Somerset.
