Homophobia seen to be rife in schools

1 min read Education
Gay people see schools as hotbeds of homophobia, according to a report by equality campaigners Stonewall.

The Serves You Right report questioned 1,600 gay men and women and found they expected discrimination by schools.

Four out of five questioned said they expected to be discriminated against if they applied to be a governor and three out of 10 felt they would receive worse treatment than heterosexual people if they enrolled their child in a school. Gay people in the North West of England were the most likely to fear anti-gay discrimination.

Stonewall's report, published yesterday (1 April), says schools need to work with the gay and lesbian community and actively encourage gay people to get involved in school life and take up governor posts. It also urges teachers to talk in class about different types of families.
