Home educators could lose benefits

1 min read Education
Lone parents who teach their children at home will be deprived of income support under plans to reduce the number of people on so-called "inactive" benefits.

Work and Pensions Secretary James Purnell has asked the Social Security Advisory Committee (SSAC) to conduct a consultation into proposed changes to social security regulations, which the government claims will reduce child poverty by getting more lone parents into work.

If the changes go through, lone parents with a youngest child aged seven or above would no longer be entitled to income support solely on the grounds of being a lone parent.

The changes would mean lone parents who school their children from home will be forced onto jobseekers' allowance instead of income support. This will require them to sign on at a job centre every fortnight, attend interviews when required and accept any suitable employment offers.
