Health visitors: Review asks for intervention

1 min read
A long-awaited review of health visiting has addressed worries that families considered less vulnerable will not be able to access services.

The independent review, led by Ros Lowe, the chair of the Queen'sNursing Institute, recommends the profession should focus on leading anddelivering the child health promotion programme, initial checks andimmunisations for young children, and early intervention for the mostat-risk families.

The Government is due to respond to the review in the autumn.

Cheryll Adams, professional officer for the Community Practitioners' andHealth Visitors' Association, said she was relieved by the review, whichprovided enough flexibility for health visitors to carry out theiruniversal role.

However, she added the role of health visitor could not be strengthenedwithout additional funding and the reopening of hundreds of trainingplaces that have been lost.
