Health strategy waters down school nurse vow

1 min read Education Health
Concerns have been raised that the government has abandoned a policy to ensure each secondary school in England has a specialist school nurse by 2010.

The government's child health strategy proposes a "school health team" in every local area, wording criticised as vague by union Unite.

The Choosing Health white paper, published in 2004, stated that each of the 3,300 secondary schools in England would have a specialist school nurse in place by 2010.

Ros Godson, Unite professional officer for school-aged children, said the latest wording appears to go back on the government's prior pledge: "It is just so vague and is nothing like the commitment previously made."

"If the money isn't ring-fenced and the commitment is not there from government then pressurised primary care trusts drawn between maternity services and cancer treatments will not give the money to well children."
