Doctors will encourage parents to radically change the lifestyle of their children under guidelines produced by the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN). Funded by the Scottish Executive, SIGN is a doctor briefing and advice group designed to lessen any variations in clinical practice across Scotland.
The guidelines, which are often referred to by GPs in England and Wales, have been produced in light of obesity becoming more common in groups of children and young people, with nearly one in five 15-year-olds classified as obese.
Doctors in Scotland using the guidelines will explain to parents and young people that most people are obese because of their lifestyle, not because of an underlying medical problem.
