Health: School sports - Cheerleader event opens to schools

A wave of interest in cheerleading among schools has seen around 800 pupils enter the first UK-wide cheerleading competition open to schools.

Previously aimed at community cheerleading clubs, the opening up of lastweekend's event, run by the National Cheerleading Association andCheer4Life, follows increasing interest from pupils in the activity with35 schools taking part.

Pat Hawkins, chairperson of the association, said: "Cheerleadingcombines athleticism, performance and personal development. Schools havebeen innovative in their embracing of cheerleading into all parts of thecurriculum and not just sport.
