Health: Report reveals extent of bullying and drug use

1 min read

The report, Young People's Health In Context, examined the state of health of 162,000 young people in 34 European and North American countries.

Just over 6,000 were from England, 4,404 were from Scotland and 3,887 were from Wales. Northern Ireland was not covered.

It found 41 per cent of young women and 45 per cent of young men aged 11 in England had been bullied, compared with an average of 35 per cent and 40 per cent in all countries. Bullying in Scotland and Wales was below or close to the average.

Julie Crossan, director of ChildLine Cymru and head of the helpline's anti-bullying programme, Chips, said the findings were a surprise. "It doesn't seem to be the case from our figures, since the amount of calls we get on bullying is consistent in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England," she said.
