According to new research, traffic accidents are not the only potential danger for children who live near a main road.

A leading expert in childhood breathing difficulties last month claimed there is a link between exposure to particles from vehicle exhausts and a child's susceptibility to the chest infection pneumonia. Apparently, children whose home is within 100 metres of a main road could be up to 65 per cent more likely than others to develop the condition

Pneumonia is an inflammation of the tissues in one or both of the lungs, usually caused by an infection. It can affect people of any age but it can be more common and serious in young children and babies

Symptoms of pneumonia include difficulty breathing, coughing up phlegm, wheezing, a rapid heartbeat, fever, feeling generally unwell, sweating and shivering, loss of appetite and chest pains. Less common symptoms include headaches, fatigue, nausea, vomiting and joint and muscle pain
