Health News: Youth offending teams - Assessments set to checkparticipation

Measures to improve the involvement of health professionals in youth offending teams will be introduced into health authorities' annual assessment.

The development follows a damning report from the Healthcare Commission,which found one in three teams in England and Wales do not have a mentalhealth worker, despite 40 per cent of young offenders having mentalhealth needs.

Let's Talk About It: a review of healthcare in the community for youngpeople who offend also found one in six teams does not have a healthworker despite primary care trusts' statutory duty to provide one.However, 90 per cent provided access to a substance misuse worker.

Many youth offending team management boards did not include healthrepresentatives.

A spokeswoman from the Healthcare Commission confirmed that new measuresto tackle the problem were to be introduced from next year that wouldfeed into ratings.
