Health News: Young Offenders - Secure forensic unit to open inLondon

London-based young offenders with severe mental health needs will no longer need to travel miles for treatment when the capital's first secure forensic mental health service for young people opens in October.

The Bill Yule Adolescent Unit at Bethlem Royal Hospital will cater for12- to 18-year-olds. It has 10 beds and is only the fourth unit of itskind in the UK.

Judith Bowen, head of child and adolescent mental health services at theSouth London and Maudsley NHS Trust, said the unit meant children couldstay in contact with their families, social workers and local child andadolescent mental health teams.

Those admitted to the unit would be young people who were offending orat risk of offending. "We are aiming to provide therapy and not justcustody," said Bowen.

Another unit is planned to open in Ealing, west London next year.
