Health News: Smoking and Obesity - Scheme to improve childhood health

Nearly 600,000 from the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund is to be used to tackle obesity and smoking in children and young people in Derwentside, Durham.

A tobacco-control scheme to cut smoking received 83,750 and obesity projects have been allocated nearly 515,000.

Obesity projects will look at healthy eating, sports and activities.

A junior fitness suite will provide access to facilities currently available only to adults.

The two-year programme will be run by members of the Derwentside Health Improvement Group, which includes Derwentside PCT, Derwentside District Council, Derwentside Leisure and the voluntary sector.

Dr Anne Low, director of public health for Derwentside and chair of the Derwentside Health Improvement Group, said: "It has been a real team effort."
