Health News: Sex education - Appropriate staff need to be chosen

Sex education will only have an impact on reducing rates of sexually transmitted infections if schools choose the staff who take the classes more selectively, according to a leading health official.

Kathy French, a specialist at the Royal College of Nursing and a member of an independent advisory group on sexual health and HIV, said teachers were not necessarily qualified to teach the subject.

Anna Martinez, co-ordinator of the Sex Education Forum, said teachers who had not received specific training often lacked the information to teach the subject confidently.
