Health News: Schools - Fizzy drinks ban for Edinburgh pupils

Edinburgh schools have been told to ban the sale of fizzy drinks within three years.

The city council has backed a report that calls for healthier alternatives to be made available in the city's 150 schools.

But pupils will still be able to bring in soft drinks as part of their packed lunches.

Edinburgh will be the second Scottish council, after Highland, to introduce such a ban.

The council said that by waiting until 2007 before it enforces the ban, schools would have time to encourage children to change their drinking habits by choosing healthier alternatives.
