The finding came from a survey of 2,000 children in 2004 by the Healthand Social Care Information Centre, which interviewed children andassessed their weight and height.
Obesity increased among boys in the age group from 14 per cent to 24 percent compared to 1995 figures, and from 15 per cent to 26 per cent amonggirls.
Younger children fared slightly better. In the two to 10 age group, theproportion rose from 10 per cent to 16 per cent in boys. However, amonggirls, there was no statistically significant increase.
