Health News: Mental Health - Young patients give views on care

Vulnerable young people in adolescent psychiatric units are being encouraged to articulate their concerns and participate in decision-making procedures following the launch of a self-advocacy toolkit.

The Headspace Toolkit, a self-advocacy and rights booklet, has been developed by the Children's Rights Alliance for England with the support of the Department for Education and Skills.

The project was based on the experience of a group of psychiatric in-patients aged from 12 to 17 years old, which was facilitated by Advocacy in Somerset, an independent advocacy service for young people with mental health problems

Joe Robertson, project leader for Headspace, said young people in psychiatric provision often lacked the confidence to express their wishes, and that the toolkit would help to set standards in their rights.
