Health News: Maternity care - Watchdog orders service review

The health watchdog has ordered a major review of maternity services after a survey of women's experiences in hospitals showed they had barely improved in a decade.

The Healthcare Commission launched the investigation after the NationalPerinatal Epidemiology Unit survey highlighted areas of concern(Children Now, 21-27 March). Concerns include disparities in the waycare is provided to women from ethnic minorities and many mums feelingunhappy at cleanliness.

Melanie Every, regional manager south for the Royal College of Midwives'said: "The survey pinpointed a number of our concerns. We hope thereview will lead to an increase in midwives."
