Health News: Maternity care - Mums and babies to get individualplans

New mothers and babies will have a personalised care plan and a lead health professional under new NHS standards.

The guidelines, issued last week by the National Institute for Healthand Clinical Excellence and policed by the Healthcare Commission, aim toprioritise mothers' social and emotional wellbeing alongside theirphysical needs.

Mothers will work with health professionals, before or after birth, todevelop an individualised care plan. This will encourage women to workout their individual requirements and to report concerns about theirmental or physical health. They will also be encouraged to reportchanges in their mood and behaviour at each postnatal contactmeeting.

Cheryll Adams, a member of the committee that wrote the guidelines, saidthey raised "considerable training and workforce implications" becausestaff would need to learn to understand the emotional needs of mothersand children.
