Health News: Immunisations - Vaccination rates hit by system flaws

Health authorities that are struggling to ensure children are vaccinated because of flawed software have been promised a new IT system by the end of the year if problems persist.

Up to a fifth of children in the 10 primary care trusts struggling toimplement interim child health systems may not be receivingvaccinations.

In a highly critical report, the Health Protection Agency says its newfigures indicate a "potential major public threat" and warns lessonsmust be learned to avoid similar problems as systems are introducedoutside London. Difficulties have meant authorities have been unable toensure all children due for jabs get them.

Although NHS Connecting 4 Health promised in February it would resolveproblems within two months, professionals report nothing haschanged.

The Health Protection Agency reported eight of the 10 primary caretrusts using the system were unable to submit information at all.
