Health News: HIV Services - Regional networks to extend support

The shortage of services for the growing number of children living with HIV outside London is set to be boosted by regional networks of specialist support.

Paediatric consultants will be appointed as leads in four regions with remits to approach HIV commissioners in primary care trusts (PCTs) for funding.

The initiative will also enable specialist HIV support to be made available for health professionals as well as social workers and voluntary-sector organisations that work with children living with HIV.

The number of children living with HIV outside London has swelled as the Government's dispersal policy on refugees and asylum seekers has moved affected children around the country.

Magda Conway, co-ordinator at the NCB's Children and Young People HIV Network, revealed that a third of the 900 children under 16 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland affected by HIV were scattered outside London, with the "small numbers, high needs" pattern making it difficult to co-ordinate provision.
