In its Healthy Schools resource for teachers, the union warns that the packaging could stigmatise pupils and discourage them from claiming free meals.
As well as bringing in their own boxes, packed meals should be stored together so pupils are not identified when they are handed out, the union suggests. It also criticises the lack of focus on food and diet in the National Curriculum, but suggests opportunities for promoting healthy living messages to pupils in subjects, and through cross-curricular work in primary schools.
