Health News: Drugs - Siblings of young users need care

Drugs services are failing to address the needs of siblings in families affected by substance misuse, a researcher has warned.

Marina Barnard, from the University of Glasgow, said that most drugs clinics treated young people as individuals and failed to consider the wider impact on siblings, who could feel neglected by parents and were at risk of greater exposure and to use.

Speaking at the Families, Carers and Misuse conference, held by drugs charities DrugScope and Adfam, she said: "Brothers and sisters can demystify use, making it much more likely that children will get hold of drugs."
