Health: Guide urges focus on mental health

Health
Every children's worker has a responsibility to promote good mental health in children, says a guide published by the Children's Services Network.

The guide, Fundamental Health, is aimed at professionals who work with children, especially those without specialist training in children's pyschological wellbeing and mental health. It explains that there is sometimes a lack of understanding about mental health problems because of confusing terminology and that it is important to raise public awareness of the issues around children's mental health.

The guide, published last week, says fundamental policy changes are needed including improved early intervention. Policy should also ensure parents have the confidence to ask for help when it is needed and promote a multi-agency approach to mental health issues.

Phil Jones, policy analyst at the network, added: "We need positive social attitudes to mental health which support work to ensure all children and young people are mentally healthy."
