Government must act to cut Neets

A training provider is calling on the coalition government to redouble efforts to tackle spiralling youth unemployment.

Scientiam, which has offices in the north west, said the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats need to provide more opportunities for young people to get work experience that could lead to a career. There are 941,000 16- to 24-year-olds not in employment, education or training, the highest level since records began in 1992.

"We know the recession is hitting young people hardest," said Amanda O'Shea, managing director of Scientiam. "We have to get this lost generation of youngsters into work. They need to learn the key skills that the business community needs and how to kick-start their careers."
