GOVERNMENT: Let's work together

2 mins read
Youth minister Margaret Hodge explains the reasons behind the new Children, Young People and Families Directorate and how it will remove barriers between professions

So creating a service that not only listens to and understands the views of children and young people but also delivers what they and their families need is central to what the new Children, Young People and Families Directorate is about.

The former Children and Young People's Unit played a vital role in helping different parts of government to work together. We are now building on that work by bringing together, under one roof, all the many and varied services and support programmes that directly affect a young person's life. We are developing a completely new multi-agency approach at the heart of central government. So, for example, our key services for young people - Connexions, the youth service, volunteering, the Teenage Pregnancy Unit and the Children's Fund - have been brought together under the Supporting Children and Young People Group.
