Good Practice: How a centre is bridging the gap for disabled children

Action for Children's Gilmerton Road Support Services is helping to reduce the hardship faced by disabled children and their families.

Project Action for Children's Gilmerton Road Support Services

Funding: About £800,000 a year from Lothian NHS and Edinburgh City, West Lothian, East Lothian and Mid Lothian councils, plus corporate sponsorship

Purpose To improve the quality of life of disabled children with challenging behaviour and their families

Background Gilmerton Road Support Services opened in 1998 in response to a nationwide drive to move care from hospitals into the community.

There was a major gap in services for disabled children and young people with complex needs who were previously accommodated in hospitals or treated there for medical and related issues, says service manager Barbara Wright.

The Gilmerton Road project, on the outskirts of Edinburgh, was set up by the charity Action for Children to meet that need, working in partnership with local health services and councils.
