Name: The Underwear Rule
Provider: NSPCC
In 2013, the NSPCC launched the "Underwear Rule" campaign in a bid to help parents protect their children from sexual abuse. The advertising campaign was aired on dozens of local radio stations throughout the UK, and easy-to-use guides for parents and children aged five to 11 were also made available.
The Underwear Rule aims to encourage parents to explain to children that their body belongs to them, that they have the right to say no if someone tries to touch them, and that it is okay to talk to an adult if they are worried or upset.
However, several studies found that disabled children are three times more likely to be abused or neglected than their peers. In addition, nearly one in six of the 60,000 people that contacted the NSPCC's helpline in 2013/14 raised concerns about children and sexual abuse.
