A new facility in Blackpool is helping care leavers access practical and education support in a single town-centre location.

Provider Blackpool Council

Name The Core

Young care leavers in Blackpool have been given a key role in creating a new drop-in centre where they can access a range of support services, from washing their clothes to getting careers advice.

The drop-in centre, called The Core, is open one day a week to care leavers aged from 15 to 25. Funded by Blackpool Borough Council, The Core came about as a result of feedback from young care leavers.

Through the Justuz Flux care leavers council group, young people told the authority they needed a dedicated place to meet and access support.

Sharon Cooper, Blackpool Council principal social worker, says: “Our young people were very vocal about how they wanted a town centre-based location where they could see their workers on a regular basis and have ready access to other services.”
