But a recent conference in London organised by conflict resolution charity Leap Confronting Conflict, called Gangs! What gangs?, went some way towards debunking the myths. The event brought together youth gangs and groups from Belfast, Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham and London in workshops and presentations.
A positive influence
A gang can actually mean anything: from a bunch of mates that hang around together, to a full on Mafia-style criminal operation. But Leap's executive director, Helen Carmichael, says only a minority of British gangs and groups are criminally active, and that the energy and friendship of youth gang members can be turned into positive opportunities for learning and action.
