Funds could be lost due to survey gaps

Council youth services could lose out on funding because of some schools' failure to supply sufficient information about positive activities on offer in their area.

Children's services watchdog Ofsted is due to publish the results of the England-wide Tellus3 survey next week. The survey included an expanded section where young people were asked to rate the quality of local activities and say whether they use such services regularly.

But Richard White, principal officer for the youth research team at the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), told last week's Association of Principal Youth & Community Officers' conference that responses in some regions had been "patchy" and that schools in 24 local authority areas had not provided "enough information for their positive activities indicator". He said this could make it difficult for the DCSF to "determine which areas needed support".
