FUNDING WATCH: Who's getting money and who's giving it - NOF gives nurseries final £9.4m

1 min read
The final wave of funding from the New Opportunities Fund's Building Neighbourhood Nurseries scheme has paved the way for 76 new and renovated nurseries.

The projects will share £9.4m from the programme, set up by the National Lottery distributors in 2001 to support the construction and renovation of nurseries in deprived areas across England. An initial £85m was allocated, with a further £15m announced in 2002.

The programme, which is now complete, was designed to complement the Department for Education and Skills' Neighbourhood Nursery initiative, which aimed to create at least 45,000 new daycare places in the country's most disadvantaged areas by this year.

Projects benefiting from the latest funding include a community centre in the crypt of St George's Church in Brighton's Kemp Town, which will be extended to provide a 21-place nursery.
