Free childcare: 20 extended hours pilots revealed

The Department for Education and Skills has named all 20 of the local authorities that will pilot an extension of free childcare.

Children Now already reported that Derbyshire and Rochdale have beenchosen to lead a group of pathfinder councils in extending free care forthree-and four-year-olds to 15 hours per week (Children Now, 30 August-5September). The other 18 authorities selected are: Blackburn; Blackpool;Gloucestershire; Greenwich; Hampshire; Haringey; Hertfordshire; Leeds;Leicestershire; Newham; Peterborough; Sheffield; Slough; Somerset;Sunderland; Telford & Wrekin; Worcestershire; and York.

All three- and four-year-olds are currently entitled to 12 hours of freechildcare a week for 30 weeks a year. But the Government has said thiswill extend to 15 hours by 2010.
