Fostering panels can learn from young people in care

We all know pressure is mounting on the care system. Local authorities need to make cuts, the number of children coming into care continues to rise and there is a chronic shortage of foster carers.

Part of the solution to this problem will be finding effective and affordable ways to recruit and retain more skilled foster carers and ensure the quality of care they provide is maintained.

Fostering panels will have a crucial role to play in this process. They make recommendations for the approval of new carers and are involved in their ongoing assessment so that standards of care remain high.

However, the majority of fostering panels do not include young people with experience of care among their membership.

So the important decisions they make are done so without the opinions of the very people the system supports.
