Foster care pilot boosts learning

Education Social Care
A two-year programme to help foster carers support children's education has had positive results, according to early evaluations.

The British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF) pilots trained 49 foster carers to help identify learning difficulties, understand the school system and help with homework. Carers in Cardiff, Kent and Southwark undertook 10-week sessions in "paired reading", which assessments show improved the confidence, literacy and comprehension of carers and children.

Full findings from the pilots and a training pack will be released later in the year.
