Financial support for 16- to 19-year-olds in education or training

1 min read Education 16-19 learning
What is it all about? Following the decision to scrap the education maintenance allowance (EMA), the government has announced its proposals to support young people who were receiving it and to introduce a 16 to 19 Bursary Fund from September.

The fund is designed to provide support for the most vulnerable young people who are in education or full-time training. This consultation gives young people the chance to comment on the plans before they are finalised.

What are the main points? From September, the 16 to 19 Bursary Fund, worth £180m per academic year, will be distributed to schools, colleges and work-based training providers to provide financial support for young people aged 16 to 19. These organisations will be expected to award bursaries of at least £1,200 a year to young people in care, care leavers and young people who are in receipt of income support to help cover some of the costs of their education or training.

Who can have their say? Young people, parents, schools, colleges and any other stakeholders in education and training.

When is the deadline? 20 May. Responses can be completed online at www.education.gov.uk/consultations.
