How do schools ensure the Every Child Matters agenda is at the heart of what they do? Ben Willis talks to schools that are using a toolkit to make sure the objectives of the government policy are incorporated into their work.

Housed in a state-of-the-art new building, there is a positive and contented buzz about Westminster Academy in west London, as students and staff mill around its huge central atrium chatting and exchanging banter. Talking to staff, it's clear that this can be at least partly explained by the systems put in place as a result of the strategic planning exercise.

Westminster Academy is one of the schools using the Training and Development Agency's (TDA) School Improvement Planning Framework - a toolkit designed to help schools incorporate Every Child Matters objectives into their day-to-day business.

- Make a positive difference

"The toolkit is intended to help schools have a proper process in place to develop their improvement plans," explains Caroline Coles, head of extended schools at the TDA. "It's designed to ensure the Every Child Matters agenda is integral to schools' core business by encouraging them to look at the barriers to a child's learning and what will make a positive difference in the school and beyond."
