Family Separation: Exclusion of parenting plans from pilots upsets campaigners

1 min read
Legal experts and family campaigners have expressed their disappointment that parenting plans have not been included in pilot schemes to help separating couples avoid court battles over contact with their children.

The plans offer parents practical examples of contact arrangements and give them an idea of what the courts may impose if they cannot agree.

They were widely expected to be part of the Family Resolutions Pilots, under way in London, Brighton and Sunderland.

The pilots are a key plank of the Government's green paper on family separation.

Parents are referred by the courts and separately attend two group sessions aimed at making them consider the impact separation and conflict will have upon their children. They then meet for mediation.

Kim Beatson, chair of Resolution (formerly the Solicitors Family Law Association), said: "It is a great shame that parenting plans were not brought into the pilot at the earliest stage. There are a lot of plans around at the moment and I don't think it would have been too difficult to make them accessible."
