Family law minister Harriet Harman came under attack this week after suggesting children deal directly with trained magistrates during family court battles.

Harman said that magistrates should be trained to talk to childrendeemed mature enough to give their views to the court.

Nagalro, the professional association representing children's guardians'slammed the proposal. "Guardians know how to involve children in theadult world of court proceedings," said Alison Paddle, Nagalro's chair."Ministers should support the work of the existing professionals."

Harman's proposal comes in the middle of a Government consultation onthe representation of children in the family courts.
