Liz Goldthorpe, chair of the Association of Lawyers for Children, admitted she was surprised that Lord Justice Potter, who has a background in commercial law and little experience in family law, had been named as the successor to Dame Elizabeth Butler-Sloss. She will retire in April after more than five years as president of the family division.
Goldthorpe praised the contribution of Butler-Sloss. "She has been so proactive and made such a huge contribution. She has always been open to discussion."
