When Kensington and Chelsea's youth services established itself as Epic Community Interest Company (CIC) in January last year, it became the country's first employee-led youth mutual.
One year on, Epic CIC is just one of three social enterprises - along with Knowsley Youth Mutual and Young Lambeth Cooperative - delivering council youth services outside of the remit of the local authority.
But with a further five youth services (see box) receiving support from the Cabinet Office to explore the possibility of spinning out on their own, youth mutuals are likely to become a more prominent feature of the youth service landscape over the coming years.
