Ofsted's latest inspection report on local authority youth work cites improvements in both the quality and quantity of provision

What makes good youth work?

Not sure I feel qualified to stray into that discussion - however, the latest Ofsted report on the evidence it gathered on local authority youth services between 2005 and 2008 gives a reasonable overview. And it highlights the greater priority given to the provision of services for young people, which has got to be good news.

Why is that?

Well, the phrase "unprecedented transformation and change in youth services, youth offending services, Connexions and third sector providers" pretty much sums it up. To which we can add: the development of the new local authority duty to secure access to positive activities, the publication of Aiming High for Young People, the numerous changes to education and training for 14- to 19-year-olds, and a welcome focus on the young people's workforce.
