Election: Labour makes late pledge of 430m for extended schools

1 min read
Labour goes to the polls tomorrow (Thursday 5 May) with a promise of an extra 430m to kick-start extended schools across the country.

The pledge comes on top of 250m already announced in the budget to ensure schools "take off and take off soon".

Speaking at the Shout Out for Children event organised by 4Children last week, children's minister Margaret Hodge said: "By 2010 every child in every school will be able to access a range of enriching activities and childcare all day, all year, most of it in schools."

Hodge also said she was considering a Bill to create a duty on local authorities to deliver this pledge.

Labour officials denied this conflicted with proposals for greater autonomy and three-year ringfenced budgets for schools, introduced by the Education Act 2005.
