When the Fast Track to Attendance scheme was launched in September,8,000 pupils were targeted. But schools have identified a further 2,000hardcore truants and the net has been widened.
Charities and education welfare officers have already condemned thescheme under which parents face fines or prison if their child'sattendance does not improve (Children Now, 28 September-4 October).
Meanwhile, the Department for Education and Skills has announced anagreement between travel agents and the Government, designed to reducethe incentives for parents to take their children on holiday in termtime.
