Education News: Truancy - Government urges incentives to attend

The Government is urging teachers to offer pupils rewards and incentives for good attendance.

According to guidelines published on teachernet.gov.uk, teachers shouldhand out certificates in assembly and have homework-free days to rewardpupils for regularly turning up.

But the Government has insisted the rewards are balanced by firmpunishments for persistent truants. A number of schools have introducedprizes to encourage students to attend class.

The guidelines come after a report claimed that truancy sweeps are notcost effective (Children Now, 14-20 September).
