Education News: Safety - 5.5m will go on swimming lessons

Children who can't swim by the age of 11 are to be offered intensive swimming lessons, the Government announced last week.

The Government's 5.5m project will aim to ensure every11-year-old can swim at least 25 metres. Children who cannot swim by thetime they reach secondary school age will be sent on two weeks ofintensive swimming classes.

The Top Ups project will be run by the Amateur Swimming Association andhas enough funding to last two years. The Department for Education andSkills estimates that one in five 11-year-olds will take part.

The project follows a trial held last year that involved more than 800children from Bristol and County Durham. Of those who took part, 57 percent achieved the 25 metres standard after the two weeks.
