And there is no reason to suggest that the national commitment to include pupils with special educational needs in mainstream schools wherever possible will have an impact on overall levels of achievement, researchers from Manchester and Newcastle universities said.
Their report, Inclusion and Pupil Achievement, said there were "clear indications" that levels of attainment in LEAs with higher levels of inclusivity were similar to those in LEAs with lower levels.
The researchers carried out a statistical analysis of National Pupil Database information from Key Stages 1 to Key Stage 4, and looked at case studies of inclusive schools where there were differing levels of attainment.
