Editorial: The devil's in the detail for children's centres

1 min read
It's not very often that a speaker at a business conference gets a loud cheer from the floor, but Norman Glass, chief executive of the National Centre for Social Research, speaking at Children Now's children's centre conference last week, received just that.

Why? Because he was brave enough to say what many in the audience obviously believe - that the Government is guilty of a lack of detail about what it wants from children's centres. And this is making children's professionals tasked with rolling out the centres' grand plan very nervous indeed.

People are anxious about structures and processes. It's all very well to talk about ethos and philosophy, but people also want to know how things will work on the ground. While children's centres might not be about buildings but rather a way of thinking about providing a service, staff are clamouring to understand how the model will work in the real world.
