Editorial: Parents' confidence in nurseries shattered

1 min read
Adults shouting at toddlers, accusing small children of being whingers, leaving them to cry for half an hour before any attempt is made to comfort them, teasing them with food. These are just some of the abuses and bad practices uncovered in last week's BBC investigative documentary Nurseries Undercover, and it would not be going too far to say it left parents reeling.

I have spoken to several in the past week and while some have defended the nurseries their children go to, others have said they intend to rethink their childcare arrangements. One parent is taking the fact that his son hates nursery, and dislikes one staff member in particular, much more seriously.

To defend the sector, as some have tried, by arguing that the BBC's investigation merely found one or two bad seeds, is not convincing. It may be true. But that does not stop every parent from wondering whether the nursery their child goes to could be one of that tiny minority.
